What is RF testing – and why is it necessary?

about
RF (radio frequency) testing measures whether emergency responder radio signals can penetrate throughout your building.
Fire codes require buildings to maintain specific radio coverage levels. Your AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) needs verification that your building meets those compliance requirements.

Testing by a certified technician either confirms your building passes or identifies the need for a signal amplification system.

OUR PROCESS

The RF testing process

PHASE-01
RESEARCH
We identify the frequencies that need to be tested in order to gain your building AHJ approval.
01
PHASE-02
Grid planning
We create a digital testing grid for each floor in your building with 20 measurement points based on your AHJ requirements and your building’s layout.
02
PHASE-03
Testing
Using the grids to guide him, one of our FCC-certified technicians walks around to every required point in your building wearing a machine called a spectrum analyzer. As required by code, he tests according to the radio frequencies your local emergency departments use.
03
PHASE-04
Reporting
We deliver a comprehensive report showing signal coverage patterns and compliance status throughout your building.
04
PHASE-05
Next Steps
If your building passes the test, we prepare all necessary documentation for AHJ approval. If your building fails, we provide detailed recommendations for the best, most cost-effective signal amplification system (or ERRC) possible.

Important numbers

A passing result means that 95% of your building measures at -95 dB or higher, plus DAQ of 3.0 or greater.
For specific “critical areas,” 99% of those spaces must hit the above metric.
